Passengers in Tuesday's Fatal Crash Identified

Authorities say 16-year-old Jonathan Thomas and Rey Chacon, 17, were fellow passengers in a car that rolled down an embankment onto Interstate 35 on Tuesday, killing two.

Investigators with the Minnesota State Patrol have released the names of the two other passengers involved in the  just north of the Burnsville-Lakeville border Tuesday afternoon. The crash killed Frederick Jeffery Alexander, 16, of Burnsville, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:30 p.m crash. Alesha Katherine Roehl, 17, of Burnsville died a few hours later at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Two Lakeville South students—Jonathan L. Thomas, 16, of Lakeville and Rey Chacon, 17, of Burnsville—sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash on Interstate 35, according to a State Patrol media release updated Friday morning. Both were taken to HCMC in Minneapolis for treatment.

The driver was taken to  in Burnsville and treated for minor injuries. The name of the driver of the car has not been released by the state patrol. According to a recent report in the Star Tribune, the driver had only a provisional license, which limits how many passengers could ride in his car to only one person under the age of 20. 

Roehl’s is planned for Saturday. A for Alexander is scheduled for Monday.

The state patrol says the 1992 Toyota Camry in which the teens were riding in was traveling south on Buck Hill Road when it lost control, rolled down the embankment and landed on the southbound lanes of I-35. Alexander and Roehl were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and were ejected from the car.

The driver could face criminal charges, depedning on the outcome of an ongoing inquiry. The state patrol and Burnsville Police continue to investigate.
