Performing Arts Center Management Co. Will Stay On—With Some Caveats

Tuesday night, the council renewed ties with VenuWorks, the management company that has led the Burnsville Performing Arts Center since the beginning, but the contract will have some stiff, new provisions.

The Burnsville City Council opted for incumbent management firm, VenuWorks, to helm the city's $21 million performing arts center, but some had a stern message for the company: Beat the bottom line, or else.  "Gone are the days when we'll accept a $200,000 or $250,000 operating loss. I just don't believe anyone has the stomach for that," said Council Member Dan Kealey. "No one really believes that's acceptable." The Burnsville Performing Arts Center has run up an annual deficit ever since it opened in 2009. VenuWorks has managed the center from its opening day forward. The city began exploring new management options in late summer of 2012, with one year left on VenuWork's contract. Over fall and early winter, the center attracted two …

The other party is VenuWorks, the Iowa-based company that has run the BPAC since it opened in 2009. VenuWork's current contract expires at the end of the year. The city plans to begin seeking management contractor proposals for the Burnsville Performing Arts Center in early November.

Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter For the first time since opening the Burnsville Performing Arts Center in 2009, the city will open up its management contract for competitive bidding. “This is not a startup,” said Burnsville Performing Arts Center Advisory Commission chair Sal Mondelli  “We’re in a growth mode, so we need somebody who’s got a track record of growing things, of taking it to the next level.” The City of Burnsville's contract with VenuWorks, the company currently managing BPAC’s operations, is nearing its end. On Wednesday the commission conducted a formal discussion of the Request For Proposal process, which will allow other management companies to put in a bid for the BPAC. This …

Curtain Call: BPAC Head Resigns

Jon Elbaum's last day with the troubled Burnsville Performing Arts Center will be Aug. 31.

In a few short weeks, the Burnsville Performing Arts Center will no longer have an executive director at the helm. Jon Elbaum announced his resignation on Wednesday after a year-and-a-half as the controversial facility's executive director. Elbaum is departing on Aug. 31 for a position as the lead administrator for the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in New York state. "I cannot begin to express how difficult a decision this was for me," Elbaum stated in a press release sent out by his employer, VenuWorks, which is charged with the BPAC's operations. "This job opportunity will allow my wife and me to live within an hour or so of our daughters. I have enjoyed my time in Burnsville." Elbaum took over for former Executive Director Wolf Larson in…
