The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is mourning the loss of Delores "Skip" Bluestone, who passed away on May 16, 2013.
Delores "Skip" Bluestone Delores "Skip" Bluestone, 74, died on May 16, 2013, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. She had been ill since April 26, 2013. Delores was a member of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. She is described as a traditional Dakota elder and fluent speaker of the Dakota language. A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11 a.m., at the Tiowakan Spiritual Center, 14625 Prairiegrass Drive, Prior Lake. A traditional all night wake will be held in her honor on Sunday, May 19, 2013, after 4 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A private interment will take place at Prairie Island Indian Community, Welch, Minnesota, at a later date. Eight people with ties to Burnsville, Savage and Shakopee passed away over the past week, including an eyewitness to atom bomb testing in the early 1950s.
Robert B. Opseth Robert B. “Bob” Opseth, of Burnsville, died on May 9, 2013 at the age of 84. Opseth was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. During his military service he participated in a series of atom bomb tests in the Nevada desert known as Operation Tumbler Snapper. His funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, at White Funeral Home in Burnsville. Visitation will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 on Monday, May 13, 2013 and one hour prior to service. Marion Louise Draeger Marion L. Over the last two weeks, at least nine people have died in Savage, Shakopee or Burnsville, including a 19-year-old Shakopee High student and Mrs. L, the owner of the Spur Cafe and Truck Stop.
"Mrs. L"—April 25 Jeanette S. Leitchman, known to many as "Mrs. L," died at the age of 89 on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville. Leitchman was a longtime resident of Savage and the co-owner of the Spur Cafe and truck stop as well as a resort in Amery, WI, a tavern, and a motel in Richfield. Nancy L. Lance D. Carnahan, of Burnsville, passed away on March 6, 2013 at the age of 68. Carnahan was originally from Worthington, in southwestern Minnesota. He was a 1962 graduate of Worthington High School. He married Dolores Marsh in Worthington on April 4, 1964. He is preceded in death by his father, Donald, and father-in-law, Cecil Marsh. Burnsville resident Loretta K. Jensen, nee Eischen, passed away on March 3, 2013 at the age of 89. She is preceded in death by her sister, Sally. Jensen is survived by her husband of 69 years, Foster; children, Kathy (Richard) Gustafson, Larry (Kimberly) Jensen and Craig Jensen (Gail Fenton); grandchildren, Robert, John, Erik, Meredith, Tyler, and Dokoda; great-grandchildren, Tracy, Mitchell, Nicolas, Alexander, and Kirsten; nine step-grandchildren; also by other loving relatives and friends. A memorials service for Jensen is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at White Funeral Home in Burnsville. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Donations to the local Salvation Army are preferred in lieu of flowers.

On Wednesday, Eagan resident Conrad Nilsen Smith died at the age of 56 after a three-year battle with brain cancer.
Minnesota's professional sports community is mourning the loss of Conrad Nilsen Smith, an Eagan man who was also a power player on the business side of the Minnesota Lynx. Smith died on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 after a lengthy bout with brain cancer. His passing has been deeply felt by his colleagues. “Simply put, Conrad is irreplaceable. I have known and worked with Conrad since 1986, and his professionalism and passion for his work is unlike anyone I’ve ever met," Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx President Chris Wright said in a statement released after Smith's death. Joyce Marie Thamert, of Mendota Heights, passed away Jan. 16, 2013 at the age of 46. "A special thanks to all those who cared for Joyce over the years; you are truly appreciated," Thamert's family wrote. She is survived by her parents, Bob and Barb Thamert; sisters: Jean (Thomas) Levandowski and Jody Thamert; niece and nephews, Emily, John, and Paul as well as other loving relatives and friends. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at Church of the Risen Savior in Burnsville. Phyllis Martha Nelson, of Lonsdale, farmed in the area that would one day become the City of Burnsville.
Phyllis Martha Nelson, of Lonsdale, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at home, surrounded by family. She was 83 years old. Nelson was born on April 18, 1929 in Spring Lake Township to George and Otillia (Dorn) Busse. She married Harvey Nelson. The couple farmed land in Burnsville and later in Lonsdale. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; parents; and siblings Kenneth, Elmer, Delbert Busse, and Pearl Law. Nelson is survived by her loving children, Debbie (Bill) Skarupa, David W. Nelson, Dawn (Randy) Korbel, Dan (Denise) Nelson, Darwin (Sheri) Nelson, Darla Kasper; 13 grandchildren; and her sisters, Hazel Melby, Jeanette Busse and Shirley Nelson.
