With the ground wet and more rain on the way, both Burnsville and Shakopee could be subject to flash flooding.
With another onslaught of spring storms approaching, the south metro could become a soggy mess. The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a flood watch for central and eastern Minnesota, including Dakota, Scott, and Hennepin counties. Chaska, Shakopee and Burnsville were specifically mentioned in the alert. The forecast calls for thunderstorms through Tuesday, and rain through Wednesday night. Much of the region already got two to four inches of rain over the weekend, with some areas receiving up to five. The ground is already saturated which puts the area at a heightened risk for flash flooding on smaller rivers, streams and creeks. The NWS warns drivers to be cautious as localized flooding along roadways is anticipated as …

The proposal calls for a new bridge and a new access road in the flood-prone area.
No matter the time of the year, Rachel Waldhoff of Burnsville can most likely be found during the weekend on Burnsville’s Black Dog Road. “It’s so peaceful here, we come to watch the birds,” she said while standing on the closed Black Dog Road wood-frame bridge, which on that day provided a great view of hundreds of egrets spending time on Black Dog Lake. The area is popular for birders and anglers hoping for a catch. But due to structural issues and persistent flooding, the bridge was closed and vehicle access to the area is limited. That’s all about to change. Burnsville could be the beneficiary of several improvements to public infrastructure paid for by Xcel Energy to enhance access to its Black Dog plant, as it undergoes a $600 …

The Dakota County Sheriff's Office has asked the public for help identifying the body of a middle-aged black male.
The Dakota County Sheriff's office and the Inver Grove Heights Police Department have asked the public for help identifying a badly decomposed body found along the Mississippi River on Tuesday. It's unclear how long the deceased had been in the water prior to discovery. "That's difficult to determine. Clearly we're talking weeks, if not months," said Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows. A worker cutting grass located the body lying underneath an old dock and other debris, Bellows said. "[The worker] saw what appeared to be a pair of tennis shoes protruding from underneath the dock," Bellows said on Friday morning. The body is that of a middle-aged black male, according to a press release issued by the sheriff's office on Friday. …

The Minnesota River is in the throes of the fourth bout of flooding in 12 months, a pattern which has disrupted businesses along the river and threatens the health of forests in the flood plain.
As of Tuesday, the Minnesota River was swollen to 703.26 feet above sea level, just a hair under its anticipated crest tomorrow. By now, it’s a familiar if tiresome routine at Port Cargill and other businesses along the river’s edge — all of which have been menaced by rising tides four times in the past year. "This is very unusual," said Lisa Brickey, the warehouse manager for the Mosaic Company at the port. "I've been here since 1994 and we maybe get a flood every couple of years. This is unheard of and it's really getting kind of old." In the last 12 months the river flooded four times, according to a gauge kept by the Corps of Engineers: Once in October of 2010, again from March 2011 to May (the ninth highest flood on record) and two…

More severe weather is on the way, bringing with it high winds, heavy rains and potential flooding. The area is still in the thrall of the last passing storm system, which thundered through the region in the early morning hours of Tuesday. In a special alert released at 4:30 a.m. the NWS cautioned drivers and residents to expect strong winds out of the east, which could reach speeds of 30 to 45 miles per hour. After that, a violent thunderstorm is expected to sweep through the south and central Minnesota. The system could …

The Minnesota River at Savage/Burnsville crested at 708.7 feet on Wednesday, the highest level since 1986
Wet weather has been forecast across the metro area through Saturday and Sunday but according to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Burnsville/Savage area has little to worry about. The NWS is calling for only light precipitation until Friday morning when a more significant weather system is expected. But Steve Albrecht, Burnsville's new director of public works, insists the Minnesota River is standing firm. "The river right now is holding. We don't expect it to rise significantly," Albrecht said. "It looks like we're past the worst part of the crest just as long as we don't get substantial rainfall this spring." But as of Wednesday morning, water levels in Savage and Burnsville reached 708.7 feet, almost seven feet above flood stage…
