Obituary: Michael Myers, 85

Michael J. Myers was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Michael J. Myers, 85, of Burnsville, died on Sept. 4, 2012. Myers was a World War II Navy Veteran. He is preceded in death by parents, Michael and Mary Myers; brothers, Lawrence and Paul; sisters, Eileen Palenko and D’Ann Liptrap. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice; sons, Michael (Jane) and Timothy; daughters, Mary Myers and Connie (Christopher) Doman; ten grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren; his sister, Kathleen (Martin) Carlton; nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Mary, Mother of the Church. He was interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Source: White Funeral Home

Phonn Yin Phonn Yin, 73, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 14, 2012. Yin will be remembered during a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Mary, Mother of the Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Robert Francis “Artie“ Alton Robert Francis "Artie" Alton, 75, of Burnsville, passed away on July 12, 2012 at his home.  He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, John (Susan); daughters: Mary Grace and Kathleen Alton, and Ann (Mike) Coon; six grandchildren; siblings, Kathleen (Bill) Orme and Harry (Maggie) Alton. He is preceded in death by his sister, Theresa Mae. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012 at Mary, Mother of the Church in Burnsville. Burnsville Minister Accused of Swindling Church Out of Thousands

John Glenn Mertes is charged with depositing more than $8,000 in checks intended for Mary, Mother of the Church into his personal bank accounts.

A former youth minister at a Burnsville church has been charged with swindling the church out of more than $8,000 between August and December last year. John Glenn Mertes, 40, is charged with theft by swindle, a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. According to the criminal complaint, an administrator and an accountant at Mary, Mother of the Church contacted Burnsville police in January to report a possible theft.  Church employees told police that a $500 check acquired at a church fundraiser in November 2011 hadn’t been included in deposits from the event. Employees told police that they discovered that Mertes, who worked as a youth minister and had supervised the fundraiser, had endorsed the check and …

Father Jim Zappa celebrates 35 years of baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

When Father Jim Zappa first felt the call to priesthood, he could not have imagined that he would one day preside over a congregation almost as large as the city of Waconia. But this summer, Zappa celebrated two decades at the helm of Mary, Mother of the Church, a parish of 10,000, and over 30 years in the priesthood. “Never a dull moment, in the positive sense,” said Zappa as he reflected on the last three decades of his life.
