In Dakota County alone, nine drivers prosecuted for careless driving have killed a total of 14 people in recent years, according to the county attorney.

Jim Carlson (DFL), who represents Burnsville and Eagan. The bill was inspired by the case of Kirk Edward Deamos, a Missouri man who was recently sentenced to 30 days in jail and a $100 fine for his part in a 2011 crash that killed two roadside workers in Burnsville. The bill, SF 206, was authored by Carlson and introduced to the Senate on Jan. 31. Senators Jim Metzen (DFL), Katie Sieben (DFL) and Greg Clausen (DFL) are listed as co-authors on the legislation. The Dakota County Attorney is calling for legislative action in the wake of the case against Kirk Edward Deamos, 23, who was involved in a fatal car wreck on Interstate 35W that left two men dead.

Late Wednesday, Kirk Edward Deamos, 23, of Raymore, MO pleaded guilty to careless driving. "Careless Driving" is a misdemeanor under Minnesota statute, with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Dakota County Judge Arlene Perkkio sentenced Deamos, 23, of Raymore, MO to 30 days in jail, 200 hours of community service and a $100 fine. Authorities say Kirk Edward Deamos briefly looked down to disengage his cruise control on I-35W, then lost control of his car and hit two electrical workers by the side of the highway.
A Missouri man has been charged with careless driving in connection with a crash last October that killed two construction workers in Burnsville. Kirk Edward Deamos, 22, is charged with careless driving, a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Authorities say Deamos was northbound on Interstate 35W just south of the McAndrews Road overpass last Oct. 13 when he lost control of his car, veered into a ditch and struck Craig Carlson, 47, of Ramsey and Ronald Rajkowski, 44, of St. Joseph, who were doing electrical work by the side of the highway. Carlson died at the scene, and Rajkowski was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died. Deamos told authorities that he had bought the Mitsubishi …

This is what it is...an accident....horrible accident, but an accident just the same. No one meant to hurt anyone, let alone kill two innocents. This young man has to live with this a very very long time..it's a sad situation for all concerned. more ›
