Gun Permit Applications Spike in Dakota County in Wake of Newtown Shootings

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said Thursday that Minnesota’s permit-to-carry law allows some people with serious mental health issues to acquire firearms.

In the days after the Newtown, CT, shooting, Dakota County has seen a big uptick in applications for permits to carry a pistol. Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said the county received 30 requests Monday and 26 Tuesday—about three times higher than the seven-10 applications processed in a typical day. "We have the staff to handle" the upsurge in applications, Bellows said. But what does worry him is the fact that some of the people applying for permits may have serious mental-health issues. And under current law, there's nothing he can do about it. “Since 2008, we’ve seen a significant increase from year to year, and this year is going to be the highest year ever,” Bellows said, predicting that the county would end up processing more …

Kline Calls Connecticut Tragedy 'Unthinkable,' But Stays Mum on Gun Legislation

The second district's Congressman John Kline has been a consistent supporter of gun rights.

Congressman John Kline has issued a statement of sympathy for the families of a Connecticut town struggling to cope with a school shooting on Friday that left 26 people dead, including 20 children—but so far, the incident has not prompted Kline to reconsider his position on the issue of gun control. “As new details continue to emerge about the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, one thing remains certain: a community–and a nation–have been forever changed by an unthinkable act. My thoughts and prayers remain with the students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary, as well as their friends and family, in this time of grief,” Kline said in a brief statement released Monday.
