Sheriff: Dakota County Sees 'Unprecedented' Number of Gun Permit Applications

Each week, Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows releases a newsletter. In case you haven't seen it, Patch has it. Here is a sample of what was found in the newsletter. So far this year, Dakota County staff have processed 1,537 new permit to carry applications, plus nearly 300 renewals and address changes, according to Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows. In 2012, which broke the previous annual record by 65 percent, the county processed 2,814 permit forms over the course of the year. County staff are currently working overtime and weekends just to keep up with the permit demand, Bellows said in the weekly Sheriff's newsletter. Sheriff's Newsletter: Deputies Play Cat and Mouse with Driver Harboring Drugs

A waiting game between a Dakota County Sheriff's Office deputy and the driver of a suspicious vehicle ended with a meth bust, according to the most recent edition of the Dakota County Sheriff's Newsletter. Deputy Pat Enderlein, parked near a gas station, noticed one of the customers at the station was stalling for time, and refusing to leave the station until the deputy departed. Enderlein called in assistance, then, to dupe the suspicious man, drove out of the area. Sure enough, the driver left soon after, and was stopped for having expired tabs on his car. Police searched the vehicle after witnessing the passenger hide something under the front seat. They turned up methamphetamine, Xanax, paraphernalia and burglary tools. Click on the …

More Than He Bargained For… Last week Special Duty Deputy Terry Ecker was dealing with an eviction at a residence when he found objects that appeared to be military ordinance. The Bloomington Bomb Squad was requested and disposed of the devices quickly. Name Change… Last week we introduced our newest canine, “Ogi,” from the Czech Republic. Since that edition, “Ogi” has been renamed, “Thor,” and will begin training in March. Behind the Bars… The population in the jail averaged 233 per day last week. Since the beginning of the year, we have seen much lower jail populations compared with the same period in 2012.

From this issue: Even with the freezing temperatures, driving on the ice can be dangerous. This fact was highlighted again this weekend when a family of five traveling on Spring Lake broke through the ice. The family, with children ages three, two, and eight months, were visiting friends at a bonfire on the lake. Getting into their car, the dad decided to take a tour on the lake when the car went through thin ice in approximately ten feet of water about 50 feet from the shore. Dakota County: Alcohol- and Drug-Fueled Accidents Surge in December

December is designated National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, and Dakota County officials are warning drivers about the dangerous consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Police Seek Burnsville Man Accused of Public Masturbation

Police say Anthony Wayne Smith exposed himself and masturbated in front of a Burnsville man and his daughter in May.

Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter Authorities have issued a nationwide arrest warrant for a Burnsville man accused of masturbating in front of a man and his young daughter in May, telling police that he was “in heat.” Anthony Wayne Smith, 25, is charged with fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a gross misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine. According to the criminal complaint, police were called to a home on Brookview Drive just after 5:30 p.m. May 9 on a report of an indecent exposure. Officers met with a man and his daughter, who said they were playing basketball outside their home when Smith, wearing only bicycle shorts, approached. Smith had his hand inside …
