Beckhoff Automation, an industrial tech company, began work on its new building in July after keeping the project on hold for years.
Beckhoff Automation is skipping town. The German maker of automation software and other industrial computer technology plans to move its U.S. headquarters from Burnsville to its more diminutive neighbor, Savage. Beckhoff is building a new 44,000-square-foot office-warehouse at 13130 Dakota Ave. in Savage, to open in March 2013. Mark Lewis, manager of technical services at Beckhoff, recently told the Star Tribune that the new site will be double the size of its current facility in Burnsville—with room to grow. The building will also be custom built to Beckhoff's specifications, unlike the space it leases as of now. "It became clear that there were advantages to building something for our own use, a larger facility that would be customized …

On Sept. 17, the council approved a settlement with Motor Mart Owner Cory Townsend, who claims that the permanent closure of the intersection at Princeton Avenue and Highway 13 destroyed his business at 4905 Minnesota Highway 13. The city will pay Townsend Properties, LLC a total of $600,000: $500,000 for lost revenue at the store and $100,000 to replace the pumps at another gas station owned by Townsend, which is just three-tenths of a mile away on Highway 13. The council favored the measure 4-1. Mayor Janet Williams was the…

The Richfield-based company is experimenting with mobile stores—smaller outlets that offer only mobile devices, tablets and e-readers.
While Best Buy is in the process of downsizing many of its big-box stores throughout the state and country, its mobile stores are growing in number. Seven new Best Buy Mobile stores will open this fall, with Woodbury, Stillwater, Roseville and Burnsville locations planned. Mobile stores are typically smaller than regular stores and carry only mobile devices, tablets and e-readers. In March, Best Buy announced it would close 50 standard stores nationwide and downsize square footage in others—including the Richfield location. After first quarter profits were announced in May, anaylists attributed discounts on smartphones as a major contributing factor to profits exceeding expectations. It's no wonder the mobile-only stores are part of the …

Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter| Blog for us When opening day comes on Oct. 26, Burnsville officials are expecting a warm welcome for Wal-Mart, which successfully pushed through a proposal in May of 2011, at long last. Wal-Mart's arrival is more than 20 years overdue. The mammoth retailer beat a longstanding retreat after what Mayor Elizabeth Kautz calls "the huge brouhaha" that erupted during its first bid for Burnsville in the 1980s. At the time, the mammoth retailer hoped to plant a discount store on a quadrangle of land off of Crystal Lake Road West and Burnhaven Drive, a spot that is the present site of the Gramercy Club at Greenhaven. Residents in the nearby neighborhoods revolted after …

Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter| Blog for us Renters could soon be moving back into Country Village Apartments, a complex in northwest Burnsville that was shut down by the city in March after management failed to address squalid, dangerous conditions. "I think we need an explanation as to why it took so long. That's what we expected to see after we first discovered this problem and were just finally seeing some action on it," Kealey said. Savage has done a terrible disservice to all of the businesses in that area. The Depot is closed. The Windmill got their road closed off much earlier so that people had to go around the block to access it, now if you are not careful, you could miss the turnoff completely. Windmill is struggling and I hope they will survive all of this construction.   more ›
