Word of the nationwide Caribou closings spread after a company conference call Friday morning. The Brooklyn Center-based company issued a statement Monday.
Burnsville’s five Caribou Coffee shops are not among the more than 150 slated for closure across the nation. A source with knowledge of the company’s downsizing plans and speaking on the condition of anonymity said 80 stores are being outright closed and 80 others are being converted into Peet’s Coffee locations. Two Minnesota locations in Minneapolis—the Rand Tower store and a shop on the corner of 53rd Avenue and Lyndale Avenue South—are on the chopping block, according to the source, and are scheduled to close next week. The contract cleaning workers perform services at big-box retailers including more than a dozen Target stores in the Twin Cities area, including the Burnsville store.
Retail cleaning workers who serve Target and other stores in the Twin Cities have vowed to walk off their jobs as early as this Sunday if their employers continue to refuse to open discussions with them and the Centro de Trabajodores Unidos en la Lucha (CTUL), according to the workers' group. The CTUL said it is a Minneapolis workers center that has been organizing the workers for more than two years. In a press statement, the group said it has set a its strike deadline for noon Feb. 24 for retail cleaning contactors like Diversified Maintenance Systems, Carlson Building Maintenance, and Eurest Services. Hundreds of Twin Cities-area union janitors and security officers are slated Saturday morning to vote on whether to give their bargaining committees the right to call strikes in the stalled labor negotiations. Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 26 said it has been bargaining for months for new contracts for its more than 6,000 members who are janitors and security officers, and that the groups have been working since Dec. 31 without new contracts. The union said both of the labor bargaining committees have recommended a "yes" vote for a strike authorizstion. The discount luxury retailer plans to open a 28,000-square-foot store in the soon-to-be developed Paragon Outlet Mall.
Hello, luxury shopping: The South Metro will soon get an infusion of Prada, Pucci, Fendi, and friends. Paragon Outlet Partners announced on Monday that Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th—a discount luxury retailer—will anchor a 28,000-square-foot space in an upscale outlet mall planned for Eagan. Off 5th is just one of roughly 100 upscale outlets that will likely fill the 400,000-square-foot outlet mall, according to a press release issued by Paragon. The Baltimore, Md.-based company plans to begin construction of the mall earlier in 2013, after the city of Eagan wraps up infrastructure improvements in the area. About 17,000 chairs imported by Burnsville's Trend Lab have been recalled after a report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found that the chairs' staples could come loose.
A local company has voluntarily recalled thousands of tiny, toddler-sized armchairs. According to a report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, staples on the back binding could come loose and pose a hazard to children, who could cut themselves or choke on the strays.The China-made chairs were imported by Trend Lab, a Burnsville firm that specializes in "sophisticated, trend-right nursery décor." Between November 2007 and August 2012, about 17,0000 chairs were sold online through Walmart.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, BabiesRUs.com, Seussland.com and the company's own website, trend-lab.com.
