District 191 will be the focus of a $3 million National Institutes of Health grant looking for better ways to address childhood obesity.
Overweight elementary students in the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage school district will benefit from a new $3 million National Institutes of Health grant. In fall 2014, the University of Minnesota's School of Nursing will begin a five-year study of District 191 schools to determine the best way to address childhood obesity. "This is a huge benefit for our students and families," Dawn Willson, the district's director of health services, said in a statement. "Students will receive ongoing support to make healthy changes in their lives." The nine-month, voluntary after-school program will include small group sessions for students, a support group for parents and one-on-one coaching sessions with the school nurse, parent and child. The study builds…

Last week, Independent Schol District 191 honored teacher Mark Riggs with the first-ever Inclusion Education Practices Award.
Most people might give up a few weekend hours to volunteer for a cause they believe in. Mark Riggs—a teacher and coach at Burnsville High—is not like most people. Riggs gave up his first, second, third and fourth wedding anniversaries in the name of service, much to the delight of his wife, Jeanine. The two celebrated their first year of marriage during a karaoke night at a camp for kids with muscular distrophy. "Mark and I got up and sang 'I Got You Babe' by Sonny and Cher. It was a wonderful experience," Jeanine recalled. "We had a blast watching the kids giggle and cheer us on. I'm so happy I gave him up for that year." The couple's serenade was just one moment in Riggs' lifelong quest: To make the world a better, more inclusive place…

Foundation 191 recently gave the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District thousands in grant money to support a robotics program, literacy initiatives and a calculator lending library among other things.
In a time of budget cuts and economic uncertainty, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District got a small windfall at its last meeting on Sept. 1. Foundation 191, an independent non-profit, gave the cash-strapped school district $10,459 for 11 supplementary school programs that would otherwise go unfunded. During this grant cycle, the foundation received 27 applications, said foundation President Stephen Fiebiger, almost double the number of requests last year. All told, the applicants requested $91,000 in grants. It is the second year that the foundation has offered grant packages to the school district since the non-profit started up in 2005. Fiebiger believes the influx is due to positive buzz. He said the foundation's reputation among…
