Civil servants, tacos, fake margaritas and a mariachi band are expected to show up for Arbors at Ridges' Cinco de Mayo party.
Cue up the mariachi band—Cinco de Mayo is fast approaching. The celebration of Mexican heritage on May 5 is sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day. However, Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Battle of Puebla, a turning point in Mexican history and freedom. For the fourth consecutive year, the Arbors at Ridges assisted living campus in Burnsville will be hosting a Cinco de Mayo-themed lunch to help raise money for the Burnsville Fire Department (BFD). Tacos, chips, salsa, churros and non-alcoholic margaritas will be served. Members of the fire department will be in attendance and entertainment will include a mariachi band and a raffle. KSTP has more details about the event: The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at …

Burnsville emergency responders, along with personnel from other local agencies, trained last week during a mock chemical spill at the Burnsville Water Treatment Plant.
Editor's Note: The following is a press release from the Burnsville Police Department. A chemical spill at the Burnsville Water Treatment Plant results in a number of victims – and a coordinated effort by multiple agencies to save lives and contain the situation ensues. That was the scenario on Oct. 4 when members of Burnsville Police, Fire and Public Works —along with Fairview Ridges Hospital and multiple neighboring agencies—performed a real-time mock emergency response drill. “The Police Department trains regularly for the more ‘routine’ types of calls,” said Burnsville Police Sgt. and Emergency Management Coordinator Don Stenger. “Our Fire Department also has an aggressive training program—but again, the focus is usually on ‘routine’ …

Capt. Tanya Schwartz, replacement for Eric Werner, could be the only woman to have attained such a rank in Dakota County.
Burnsville, say hello to Tanya Schwartz, the city's first female police captain. Schwartz replaces Capt. Eric Werner, who recently left the department to become the chief of police for the City of Rosemount. On Sept. 10, she was sworn in as captain. It's an unprecedented move for both the Burnsville Police Department and Schwartz as a person. "Scaling the ladder really wasn't my focus. Coming here I just wanted to be the best cop I could be," Schwartz said. Schwartz joined the BPD seventeen years ago. Prior to her promotion, she was a sergeant for 11 years. Mayor Elizabeth Kautz fondly recalled Schwartz's first days with the agency as a rookie cop, which coincided with her early career as a new mayor. "I love it," Kautz said. "I think it…

The BPD is hopping on the social media bandwagon with a Twitter account: Is a Facebook page next?
The Burnsville Police Department is not shy when it comes to technology. The agency was one of the first in the nation to embrace AXON body cameras, for instance. But so far, the BPD has steered clear of the social media revolution. Until now, that is. Wednesday, the department announced that it would join a growing number of law enforcement agencies who use Twitter. The BPD is in good company. The Minnesota State Patrol and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are both active in the Twittersphere, releasing amber alerts and information about breaking news on the platform. However, Twitter is not widely used among law enforcement agencies in Dakota County, with the notable exception of the Apple Valley PD. Is Facebook the next frontier for the …

Following a mass shooting at the "Dark Knight" premier in suburban Colorado, the Burnsville Police Department will be dispatching extra patrols to the area around Paragon Odyssey 15.
Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Sign up for our daily newsletter Local authorities will be on alert tonight, as the nation reacts to one of the worst mass shooting in its history. So far, Burnsville's movie theater has not requested additional police presence inside the Paragon Odyssey 15, said Sgt. Dave Zerwas, but the PD will have extra patrols in the area. "We have requested officers to make their presence very well known there. That's our general response any time anything like that happens in a community that is similar to ours," Zerwas said. The community in question is Aurora, CO—a suburb of Denver which became scene of mass murder and mayhem after 24-year-old suspect James Holmes allegedly stormed a midnight premier of…

It certainly is appropriate to use simulations/drills and other means to prepare for possible emergency situations, such as a hazardous chemical release. The LEPC, local hazmat organizations and local industries that make/use/store/transport hazardous chemicals should also consider the acquisition and use of commercially available technologies (software and hardware) that specifically deal with …   more ›
