Civil servants, tacos, fake margaritas and a mariachi band are expected to show up for Arbors at Ridges' Cinco de Mayo party.
Cue up the mariachi band—Cinco de Mayo is fast approaching. The celebration of Mexican heritage on May 5 is sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day. However, Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Battle of Puebla, a turning point in Mexican history and freedom. For the fourth consecutive year, the Arbors at Ridges assisted living campus in Burnsville will be hosting a Cinco de Mayo-themed lunch to help raise money for the Burnsville Fire Department (BFD). Tacos, chips, salsa, churros and non-alcoholic margaritas will be served. Members of the fire department will be in attendance and entertainment will include a mariachi band and a raffle. KSTP has more details about the event: The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at …

Over the next two weeks, the intersection will be subject to drilling fire squads, in addition to several closures for construction.
Beginning Sunday, April 28, drivers may notice something odd going on near the County Road 5 and Highway 13. Burnsville Fire Chief BJ Jungmann has asked residents to take special care on the ice this winter as temperatures fluctuate up and down.
Word to the wise: There is no safe ice. As of Feb. 4, three Minnesotans had already died as a result of crashing through weak ice. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, on average, about four people died on ice during the winters from 2001 to 2011, the latest statistics available. In light of the circumstances, Burnsville Fire Chief BJ Jungmann has written up a few tips for residents. • What is Safe Ice? "There’s no such thing. You should never stand or drive on ice without being ready to react if it gives way." Jungmann wrote. • What should you do if you fall through? "You’ll hear a warning crack, probably. Try not to gasp if you fall; it causes you to inhale water. Turn back in the direction you came from and …

Officials are still assessing the damage from Saturday, when a rare November storm spawned two tornadoes that ripped through the city's central corridor.
This weekend, Burnsville resident Karen Everts came home to an astonishing sight: A giant basswood tree, upended at the roots and lying on a a better portion of her well-kept suburban ranch house. Not the best welcome after arriving home from a getaway in Branson. "We were prepared, but not to have it this bad," Everts said on Monday, noting that the kitchen was in good shape so the family's Thanksgiving could go forward as planned. "We're just lucky that no one was hurt. It could have been so much worse." The tree crashed into the house on 136th Street during Saturday's November squall, which culminated in two brief but forceful tornadoes. The twin funnel clouds cut a path through a narrow corridor stretching northeast from corner of I-…

The 25-year-old facility, located in Burnsville, is shared by Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville and Eagan. Each member city plans to contribute $500,000 to the project.
After nearly 25 years and thousands of live burn exercises, a 1,200-square-foot fire training facility in Burnsville is ready to crumble, according to Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott. “We got our years out of it, and we’ve been having a lot of maintenance issues with it," Scott said. "It’s essentially just disintegrating." Which is why Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville and Eagan—the four cities that use the shared facility—each contributed $500,000 this year for a serious overhaul of the site, located near the intersection of Hwy. 13 and Interstate 35W in Burnsville. On Monday, the Burnsville Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend approval of a rezoning request to facilitate the renovation of the site. The request will likely go …

In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, the Burnsville Fire Department Open
House is Thursday, Oct. 11, according to guest columnist and Burnsville Fire Marshal Lee LaTourelle.
One week of fire prevention just isn’t enough. Take it from me—as Burnsville’s Fire Marshal, I make fire prevention a full-time job. While preparing for the unexpected is difficult—taking action, doing what you can and making a plan can save lives. Next week, Oct. 7-13, is National Fire Prevention Week. As I’ve mentioned, I’d prefer if fire prevention were top-of-mind more than once a year—but Fire Prevention Week is a good opportunity to put it to the forefront. Take some time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, change their batteries and practice your fire escape route. And don’t forget—stop by the Fire Department’s Annual Open House. In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, the Burnsville Fire Department Open House …
