More Boy Scout 'Perversion Files' May be Released

AP report: Case originated with suit against Burnsville Scoutmaster Peter Stibal II, serving a 21-year sentence for molestation.

A lawsuit filed by a victim of Burnsville's Peter Stibal II, now serving a 21-year prison sentence for molesting four Boy Scouts, has resulted in an order that the national scouting organization release files documenting the sexual abuse of children from 1999 to 2008. According to this Associated Press report, Ramsey County District Judge Elena Ostby issued the order Tuesday. Stibal was sentenced in 2011; his troop frequently met at River Hills United Methodist Church, court documents said. The documents Ostby is seeking are from internal Boy Scouts of America records that chronicle allegations of abuse, often called the “perversion files.” Some of those files were public by court corder in Oregon last year. But the documents released in…

Boy Scouts' 'Perversion Files' Include Former Burnsville Man

Records released this week show that a 19-year-old man was kicked out of the organization after admitting to taking "indecent liberties" with boys in 1966.

A 19-year-old airman in the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1960s, who worked for several months with a Burnsville Boy Scout troop, is among those listed in the organization’s so-called “perversion files,” released this week by court order. Robert James Sykes was involved with a Burnsville troop for eight months in 1965 and 1966 before moving on to Michigan, where he was accused of inappropriate sexual conduct, according to those files.  The files were used as evidence in a 2010 molestation lawsuit against the Boy Scouts. A jury ultimately awarded $20 million to a man who was molested by an assistant scoutmaster in the 1980s. About 5,000 men – and a handful of women – were expelled from the Boy Scouts of America between 1947 and January 2005 on …

Our hearts go out to all the boy scouts who have been sexually abused, they never deserved to be treated so inhumane. Child predators need to be kept far away from kids forever... BUT, an even more powerful danger is when high ranking officials enable, empower, and cover up these crimes against kids. They need to be held accountable for allowing more innocent kids to be sexually abused. It is and…   more ›

POLL: Should the MN Boy Scouts Change Their Position on Including Gay Members?

Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America announced that the organization would uphold its standing policy regarding homosexuality, which bars openly gay people from membership. Should Minnesota break away from the pack?

Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America reignited the ongoing debate over gay rights. According to a June 7 press release from the national organization, in April of this year a "single individual" submitted a resolution asking the Boy Scouts to reconsider its policy against granting membership to open or avowed homosexuals. Tuesday, an 11-member panel reaffirmed the national organization's committment to its existing policy. The BSA's official policy is as follows:  “While the BSA does not proactively inquire about the sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, we do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA. Scouting …

Stibal Sentenced to 21 Years

Former scoutmaster pleads guilty to a series of sex crimes.

Friday, Peter Robert Stibal, II, pleaded guilty to multiple counts child molestation and possession of child pornography. However, officials at the Dakota County Attorney's Office said the 46-year-old Burnsville man simultaneously insisted he was innocent. The charges first emerged in 2009, when four boys told police that Stibal sexually assaulted them on numerous occasions while acting as the scoutmaster of Burnsville's Boy Scout Troop #650 from 2002 to 2008. The boys were between ages 11 and 14 at the time the abuse began. During the course of the investigation, Burnsville authorities also discovered child pornography on Stibal’s home computer. Stibal stood trial for sex crimes against the first victim in April, who told investigators …
