Bootcamp: For Whom the Kettlebell Tolls

Jason Cameric saw an opportunity to test out some new techniques in Thursday's class. It was no fun.

Editor's Note: Bootcamp is a column I'm writing based on my experiences at Burnsville's Beyond Personal Training. On April 4, I took advantage of a Groupon offering unlimited bootcamp sessions for a month. These are my stories. Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls chronicles the story of an American man struggling through the brutality of civil war in Spain. After taking part in consecutive bootcamps with BPT trainer Jason Cameric, I feel as though I'm ready for battle. Much different from my earlier camps, Wednesday morning was a cinch. We were guided through the circuits in what has become the usual fashion: 15 minutes of core work and then stations that offer a nice combination of strength and cardiovascular circuits. I finished …

Week in Review: Police, Prostitution and Personal Training

A weekly rundown of the stories that readers deemed most interesting over the past seven days

Week in Review is a rundown of the most popular stories on Burnsville Patch over the last seven days.   This week we covered the city council's vote to abolish the primary and proceed with a special election to fill Charlie Crichton's vacant seat and the somewhat promising housing market in Burnsville to the work of Burnsville's state legislators and a local man convicted on charges of assault and child endangerment.  But the Week in Review is about what has most peaked the interest of the public. And with that, the list is limited to just the top five.  In order of descending popularity, the week's most popular stories are the following: 5. Prostitution Sting in SW Minneapolis Nets Burnsville Woman A returning Week in Review story, this …

Bootcamp: Defeat Does Not Exist In This Dojo, Does It?

BPT co-owner and former college athlete Catherine Hoha prefers workouts that mimic motorcycles

Editor's Note: Bootcamp is a column I'm writing based on my experiences at Burnsville's Beyond Personal Training. On April 4, I took advantage of a Groupon offering unlimited bootcamp sessions for a month. These are my stories. A recent personnel change at BPT put co-owner and resident fitness queen Catherine Hoha in charge of Friday morning's bootcamp session.  I've got to admit, after being put through the ringer for the past few weeks—courtesy of Jason Cameric and Jeff Culhane—seeing Catherine prepare session notes was a big relief. At least that's what I thought at the beginning. A Division I college athlete at Arizona State University, Catherine—along with husband Trevor—turned athletic prowess into a successful business. Using what I…

Bootcamp: Begging For Mercy

Bootcamp trainer Jason Camerlic threw down the gauntlet in Sunday morning's class. I could not answer

Editor's Note: Bootcamp is a column I'm writing based on my experiences at Burnsville's Beyond Personal Training. On April 4, I took advantage of a Groupon offering unlimited bootcamp sessions for a month. These are my stories. As soon as a I walked inside Beyond Personal Training (BPT) for this morning's 10 a.m. class something seemed amiss.  Personal trainer Jason Camerlic was running through final drills with his 9 a.m. class and although they were pulling a sled filled with weights from one end of the gym to the other, that was not the problem.  The distinct lack of any other classmates was the issue. Uh oh, I thought.  When the 9 a.m. class finished, Jason told me that the direction of today's workout was going to be decided by me. He…

Bootcamp: Frogs Are A Lot Stronger Than They Look

Thursday's class with trainer Jason Camerlic left me stranded and sore for most of the next 36 hours.

Editor's Note: Bootcamp is a column I'm writing based on my experiences at Burnsville's Beyond Personal Training. On April 4, I took advantage of a Groupon offering unlimited bootcamp sessions for a month. These are my stories. It is 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon and I've been stranded in my basement writing articles all day because my legs simply will not allow me to perform the simple task of ascending a staircase.  After Wednesday's legs workout with Jeff Culhane, the class met up with personal trainer Jason Camerlic on Thursday morning.  Jason is a bulldog of a man: shaved head, tattooed and built like a floor safe.  He is the kind of trainer that seems to have an unlimited amount of energy and, due to the imposing figure he cuts, you …

Bootcamp: My Sixty Minutes Might Be Up

Personal trainer Jeff Culhane maximizes his students' workouts by focusing on circuit training

Editor's Note: Bootcamp is a column I'm writing based on my experiences at Burnsville's Beyond Personal Training. On April 4, I took advantage of a Groupon offering unlimited bootcamp sessions for a month. These are my stories. It is 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, I'm sweating profusely and my legs are shaking. No, I'm not waking up from a bad dream, actually I've just finished an hour-long legs-based bootcamp workout with trainer Jeff Culhane. Culhane is a great guy and knowledgeable fitness trainer that uses a remarkable variety of circuit training to maximize his students' effort.  For those unaware of the specifics of circuit training, it is a simple concept. The participant does one exercise non-stop for a predetermined distance or period …
