Burnsville Student Wins $2,500 National Merit Scholarship

Mitchell J. Dawson was selected from a pool of 15,000 finalists.

Mitchell J. Dawson, a Burnsville resident and senior at Apple Valley High School, is among the winners of the $2,500 National Merit Scholarships released Wednesday, the organization announced. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation selected the Burnsville student from among 15,000 finalists in the 2013 National Merit Program. The winners are judged to have the best combinations of “accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.” The number of winners in each state is proportional to the number of graduating seniors in the state. Avid Sportsman, Drag Racer Dies at Age 31

Burnsville resident Mark Austin Smith, 31, died due to complications resulting from kidney disease and blood clots.

Mark Austin Smith, of Burnsville, died on Nov. 8, 2012 at Fairview Southdale Hospital due to complications of kidney disease and blood clots. He was just 31 years old.  Smith's family describes him as a gregarious young man with a contagious sense of humor. He was an active man who loved to hunt and ice fish. While in school he also loved sports, particularly basketball, football, skateboarding and soccer, "his true love." He was a longstanding member of the traveling soccer team for Valley United.  He was also an automotive enthusiast. After graduating from Apple Valley High School, Smith attended Dakota County Technical College where he studied to become an autobody technician. This week, the officials with Miss MN Valley announced its contestants for this year's program: Among them was 15-year-old Alissa Jones, a sophomore at Apple Valley Senior High School. She is the daughter of Teresa Lebaron and Keith Jones of Burnsville. The Miss Mn Valley Scholarship Program is a relatively new organization. The non-profit was established in 2009 with the aim of providing scholarship money for 16- to 18-year-olds in the Minnesota Valley Region. The Blaze remained unbeaten in South Suburban Conference play thanks to two homers by Justin Threlkeld

The Apple Valley baseball team fell to Burnsville at home on Wednesday, also falling to 2-2 on the year. The Blaze picked up two home runs from Justin Threlkeld, while Bo Hellquist picked up the win. He had six strikeouts in three innings of work. Burnsville leads the SSC’s standings. Apple Valley will face Edina on Thursday.
