District 196 Approves Lunch Price Hike

Mandates in the federal Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act will require schools to provide more specific categories of food and work toward price equity for all students' meals, resulting in a need for increased lunch prices.

Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook | Get our newsletter |Write for Local Voices The District 196 School Board on Monday approved a 10-cent lunch price increase for elementary and high school students, as well as for adults, by a 6-0 vote. The increase brings lunch prices for 2012-13 to $2.20 for elementary, $2.35 for high school and $3.40 for adults. Middle school pricing will stay at $2.25. The price increase was necessary, district officials said, because of mandates from the federal Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that focus on nutrition and something called price equity, an effort to have all students contributing the same amount of money to their school-provided meals. If the board had voted against the measure, the …

School District 191 Budget Work Continues

The Board of Education approves additional spending in Fiscal Year 2013.

Work continues on finalizing the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District’s budget for the 2012-13 school year. During its meeting Thursday night, the District 191 Board of Education voted to add nearly $1.4 million of spending to its revised Fiscal Year 2013 budget, which now sits at $109.4 million. The board action was the latest step in formulating the district’s budget for next school year, which is required by state law to be approved by June 30. Some of the approved spending increase is linked to the board’s decision to restore the traditional 172 academic-day calendar for next year, rather than to move ahead with a 155-day calendar that would have added 36 minutes to each school day and created several three- and four-day weekends …

Shortened School Calendar: Nixed for Now?

In the face of strong opposition from parents, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board has set aside a cost-cutting plan that would have shaved 17 days off the 2012-2013 school year. There is some discussion of eliminating late-start days, however.

In light of resistance from parents and an unexpected windfall, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District could put plans for a shorter school calendar out to pasture—at least for the immediate future.  The abridged school calendar was just one of many cost-cutting measures considered by the Board of Education, which foresees stagnant revenue projections for the next two to three years, coupled with increases in operational costs for fuel, utilities and other basics. If these projections hold true, the district will have to slash $5 million from each annual budget for the next three years. Officials estimate that the plan would have saved about $776,000. If implemented, the district would have cut over two weeks from the 2012-2013 …
