Mdewakanton Sioux Elder, Fluent Dakota Speaker Dies at Age 74: Recent Deaths, Week of May 18, 2013

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is mourning the loss of Delores "Skip" Bluestone, who passed away on May 16, 2013.

Delores "Skip" Bluestone Delores "Skip" Bluestone, 74,  died on May 16, 2013, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. She had been ill since April 26, 2013. Delores was a member of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. She is described as a traditional Dakota elder and fluent speaker of the Dakota language.  A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11 a.m., at the Tiowakan Spiritual Center, 14625 Prairiegrass Drive, Prior Lake. A traditional all night wake will be held in her honor on Sunday, May 19, 2013, after 4 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A private interment will take place at Prairie Island Indian Community, Welch, Minnesota, at a later date. Recent Deaths, Week of May 11, 2013

Eight people with ties to Burnsville, Savage and Shakopee passed away over the past week, including an eyewitness to atom bomb testing in the early 1950s.

Robert B. Opseth Robert B. “Bob” Opseth, of Burnsville, died on May 9, 2013 at the age of 84. Opseth was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. During his military service he participated in a series of atom bomb tests in the Nevada desert known as Operation Tumbler Snapper. His funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday,  May 13, at White Funeral Home in Burnsville. Visitation will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 on Monday, May 13, 2013 and one hour prior to service.  Marion Louise Draeger Marion L. Draeger, of Apple Valley, died at her home surrounded by her family on May 6, 2013. She was 57 years old. Veteran of Korean War, Eye Witness to Atom Bomb Tests Dies at Age 84

Burnsville resident Robert B. Opseth had a front row seat for a series of atom bomb tests known as Operation Tumbler Snapper.

This week marked the passing of Robert B. Opseth, a Burnsville man whose colorful life took him from an atomic test site in Nevada to the storied halls of the Interlachen Country Club in Edina.  Opseth was born on March 22, 1929. He was a longtime resident of Burnsville, Bloomington and south Minneapolis. As a young man he was drafted into the Korean Conflict. He served with the 216th Chemical Corp in Denver, which took him to the barren wastes of the Nevada desert. According to his loved ones, he was at "ground zero" for atom bomb tests conducted as a part of Operation Tumbler Snapper. Once discharged, he enjoyed a long career with the Minneapolis Board of Education, then spent another 10 years at Interlachen Country Club. Opseth died at …

Recent Deaths, Week of May 4, 2013

At least six people from Burnsville and Shakopee died this week, including a husband and wife of 60 years who died within two days of each other.

Gerald and Joan Lauby A Burnsville couple, Gerald and Joan Lauby, passed away of natural causes this week, on April 28 and April 30 respectively. The two enjoyed 60 years of marriage. They will be memorialized together on Tuesday at a Mass of Christian Burial, which will take place at Burnsville's Church of the Risen Savior at 11 a.m. A visitation period will be held one hour prior to the service.  Anton Antepenko  Services pending.  William (Bill) Lawrence Sweeney William (Bill) Lawrence Sweeney, of Burnsville, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013 at the age of 81. Most Recent Deaths, Week of April 27, 2013

Over the last two weeks, at least nine people have died in Savage, Shakopee or Burnsville, including a 19-year-old Shakopee High student and Mrs. L, the owner of the Spur Cafe and Truck Stop.

"Mrs. L"—April 25 Jeanette S. Leitchman, known to many as "Mrs. L," died at the age of 89 on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville. Leitchman was a longtime resident of Savage and the co-owner of the Spur Cafe and truck stop as well as a resort in Amery, WI, a tavern, and a motel in Richfield. Nancy L. Broback—April 25 Burnsville resident Nancy L. Broback passed away April 25, 2013 at the age of 60. Services pending. Robert C. 'Bob' Burgess—April 24 Lakeville resident Bob Burgess died on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at the age of 60. Highway 77 Congestion Relief Subject of Two MnDOT Open Houses

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be holding open houses to deal with traffic congestion on Highway 77.

Burnsville residents may be getting some relief from traffic on their Highway 77 commutes. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is looking to add managed lanes on the highway between 140th Street West in Apple Valley and Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington in an effort to decrease congestion. MnDOT is considering three options: MnDOT will be seeking the opinions of residents, business owners and motorists are invited to attend two open houses on: The project is also looking at improved bus access to the Cedar Grove Transit Station in Eagan. Open house attendees will be able to learn the details of the project, view project layouts and ask questions of MnDOT project staff.
