Burnsville Cartoonist Back from USO Tour in Afghanistan

In September, Tom Richmond, an illustrator for Mad Magazine, and seven other cartoonists visited Kandahar Airfield.

Tom Richmond has been cartooning for a cause.

The Burnsville resident and Mad Magazine illustrator was one of eight nationally-recognized cartoonists dispatched to Afghanistan during a USO tour. According to the military media company DVIDS,  the cartoonists visited U.S. troops at Kandahar Airfield on Sept. 6, 2013. Richmond was joined by an illustrious group that included "Family Circus" cartoonist Jeff Keane, "B.C." cartoonist Mason Mastroianni, and two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez, among others. While in Afghanistan, the men spoke with troops, drew caricatures and posed for photos.

Richmond, president of the National Cartoonists Society, has toured with the USO five times. It is his second trip to Afghanistan.

“It never ceases to amaze me how much people appreciate us coming here and doing this,” Richmond told DVIDS. “It’s far more rewarding to me.”
