Caution: High Bacteria Levels Possible in Local Waters

Here are some tips that can help swimmers avoid getting sick after a day at the beach.

Hot summer weather means trips to local rivers and lakes. The hot temperatures can also cause the level of bacteria in waters to increase, the City of Burnsville has warned in a recent news release.

The city suggests that swimmers do not swallow lake or river water, cover up cuts before swimming, and shower after swimming.

The Minnesota Department of Health released the following additional water hygiene tips after three people became sick from E. coli in Lake Minnetonka:

  • Don't swim when you have diarrhea.
  • Don't swallow lake water.
  • Practice good hygiene. Shower with soap before swimming.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using the toilet or changing diapers.
  • Take children on bathroom breaks or change diapers often.
  • Change diapers in a bathroom, not at beachside.

Burnsville City staff collects three samples each week from Crystal Beach to test for E. coli. The weekly results, which have not reached unsafe levels this year, are reported on the city's website
