Two BHS Students in the Running for State ExCEL Award

Two juniors could be chosen as the statewide winners of ExCEL, a program sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League.

Britta Riggs and Jesse Beane have been nominated for the ExCEL Award — a statewide honor bestowed by the Minnesota High School League.

The program — also known Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership — as is designed to recognize high school juniors who are "model citizens:" Both Riggs and Beane are athletes who have attained 4.0 grade point averages, hold leadership positions at school and volunteer in the community.

Riggs — the daughter of another recent award recipient, teacher  — has put her efforts toward helping homeless families, the Special Olympics and BrainPower in a BackPack. Beane volunteers every week at his alma mater, Vista View Elementary, and his church.

Every school in the League can nominate a girl and boy for the award. An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota will select statewide ExCEL Award recipients over January. Winners will be recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during upcoming winter sports tournaments.
