Teiken Resigns from Burnsville School Board

The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Board of Education will soon be one short.

Thursday night, Board Member Paula Teiken announced her resignation. Her departure comes a little more than halfway through her first term, which is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2014.

Teiken told her colleagues on the board that she and her family were moving out of the district by the end of the month, though she hadn't expected to tender her resignation quite so quickly.

"When we put our house on the market we were thinking it would take months to sell and it took less than a week," Teiken said. 

The Teiken family has been very active in Burnsville's civic life. Teiken was first elected to the school board in 2010. Her husband, Chris, also chairs the City of Burnsville's Planning Commission. 

Teiken's last day on the Board of Education is March 15.

"I'm very grateful to have been a part of (the board)," Teiken told her colleagues.

Chair Sandy Sweep said that Teiken would be missed.

"This is good news for housing market, bad news for the school board," Sweep said.

At its next meeting, the board will begin the search for Teiken's replacement. District Communications Director Ruth Dunn told the Savage Pacer that the board would likely appoint a replacement, as they did when former Board Member Gail Morrison left in June 2011, rather than going to the expense of an off-year election.
