Rahn Elementary Wins District 191 Chess Championship

It was the first championship win for the school.

Sixty elementary students competed in the 30th annual chess tournament for the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District on Dec. 14, and one school finished on top.

Rahn Elementary of Arts and Technology in Eagan won its first district championship in the tournament, which took place at Metcalf Junior High. Sixth teacher Dan Jacobsen is the coach of the Rahn Elementary chess team.

Harriet Bishop Elementary, led by Coach Jessica Perry, took second place and finishing in third place was William Byrne Elementary, coached by community member Stan Kegel.

The individual hardware winners are:

  • 1st place: Jai Chadha, a 6th grade Savage resident
  • 2nd place: Gavin Kellen of William Byrne
  • 3rd place: Zach Smith, a 6th grader from Rahn
  • 4th place: Brayden Taheri, a 6th grader from  Byrne
  • 5th place: Adam Stadick, a 5th grader from Rahn
  • 6th place: Jaden Ma, a 6th grade Savage resident
  • 7th place: Andrea Day, a 5th grader from Marion W. Savage
  • 8th place: Ethan Hemmesch, a 6th grade Rahn student
  • 9th place: Chance Persons, a 6th grade Sioux Trail student
  • 10th place: Caige Oxendale, a 3rd grade Rahn student

  • First grade: Jake McKee of Burnsville.
  • Second grade: Kaiden Cheung of Harriet Bishop.
  • Third grade: Bianca Froebe of Harriet Bishop (also primary novice winner).
  • Fourth grade: Calvin York of Harriet Bishop.
  • Fifth grade: Elliot Huh of Sky Oaks.
  • Sixth grade: Robert Miller of Harriet Bishop.

Metcalf Junior High math teacher Brian Ribnick, the district's elementary chess coordinator, organized the tournament.

Every elementary school in District 191 has a chess team, and 4th graders can learn chess during the school day from a chess master. Community Education and PTO organizations sponsor a residency for the chess master to work with the students.
