It's Official: Late Start Days Are Dead in ISD 191

The new school calendar for '13-'14 completely dispenses with the much despised "late start" days and adds full two days off in their stead.

Signed, sealed and delivered: District officials have come through on their promise to eliminate late starts.

Earlier this month, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2013-14 school year. Parents will notice that the five two-hour late-start days that students love and they loathe are no longer. Instead, they will be replaced by two full days of professional development for teachers while students are off.

Otherwise, the calendar is much the same as it has always been. The first day of school for students in primary grades will be Tuesday, Sept. 3. Juniors and seniors at Burnsville High School will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Nicollet Junior High's 8th and 9th graders will also begin school a day late.

Kindergarteners begin school on Thursday, Sept. 5. The delay allows teachers to meet with each student individually.

Fall break will run for a week in October, which coincides with parent-teacher conferences and the state teacher convention. Winter break will run from Monday, Dec. 23, and end on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Students will be off for spring break during the last week of March.

The last day of school will be Thursday, June 5, with Burnsville High's commencement on Friday, June. 6.
