Burnsville Kindergarten Teacher Named 'Outstanding Educator,' Awarded $15K

Terese Trekell, a teacher at Gideon Pond, was recently honored by the the WEM Foundation and Synergy & Leadership Exchange.

Unsung hero no more.

Earlier this month, Gideon Pond Elementary kindergarten teacher Terese Trekell was given the 2013 WEM Outstanding Educator Award for Teacher Achievement presented by the WEM Foundation and Synergy & Leadership Exchange. Trekell was surprised with the honor while attending a kindergarten concert on May 9. 

In addition to the award itself, Trekell was given $15,000 to spend how she sees fit.

Trekell has been teaching for 22 years. In addition to her classroom duties, she is the teacher representative for Gideon Pond's PTO and is the kindergarten curriculum leader. 

The WEM award recognizes "unsung heros" in education. Contenders are nominated by students, parents, colleagues or community members. Those who accept the nomination are reviewed by a blue ribbon selection panel.
