Giving Thanks for Progress Made in 2013

As a state legislator, I'm grateful for the chance to serve the public and make progress on the big challenges facing our state.

The holiday season is in full swing and Minnesotans are looking forward to gathering with family, friends, and loved ones before kicking off the New Year.

It’s a time of year when we pause to reflect on what we’re thankful for. As a father, husband, and teacher, I am beyond thankful to have the opportunity to raise a wonderful, loving family and teach a classroom full of bright, talented students. As a state legislator, I’m grateful for the chance to serve the public and make progress on the big challenges facing our state.

For example, we recently learned that thanks to a projected budget surplus of over $1 billion, all the money borrowed from Minnesota schools by previous legislatures has been repaid in full. Repaying the “school shift” was a top priority of mine coming into the 2013 Legislative Session. Reaching that goal means our schools have greater financial stability and security right now and into the future. It also means Minnesota is on sound fiscal footing for the first time in years – something we can all celebrate.

As I look ahead to 2014, I’m hopeful that state lawmakers from both sides of the aisle will work together to keep moving Minnesota forward. Despite all the political bickering broadcast on the news these days, we were able to pass some good bipartisan legislation this year.

One area where both parties found common ground was public safety. 70 Democrats and 51 Republicans joined together to make sure our law enforcement officials received the resources and tools needed to keep our neighborhoods, businesses, and communities safe by passing the Omnibus Public Safety Finance bill.  It goes to show that finding common ground is not as impossible as the political pundits make it seem.
