Notice Discolored Water? It's Just Burnsville Flushing Fire Hydrants

Burnsville residents should also check the color of their water before doing laundry next week since discolored water can stain clothes.

The City of Burnsville Utilities Department will begin flushing city-owned fire hydrants next week.

The flushing needs to be done on a regular basis to make sure they're working properly for fire protection and to remove mineral deposits that may accumulate in water mains, the city explained in a news release. It might also cause discoloration of water.

According to the city:

Residents are advised that the change in water flow patterns resulting from hydrant flushing may stir up mineral deposits in city water mains. During hydrant flushing, it is not unusual for residents to periodically experience discolored water, pressure changes and/or an increased chlorine odor.

Visible iron coloration in the water is not a health issue, but may impact the aesthetic quality of water. If residents notice discolored water, they can correct the problem by opening all cold water faucets in the home and allowing them to run at the same time until the water runs clear.

During the hydrant flushing period, residents are also encouraged to check the color of their water prior to doing laundry. Discolored water may stain clothes – particularly whites. Rust remover is available from the Burnsville Maintenance Facility, 13713 Frontier Court, for residents whose laundry has become discolored as a result of hydrant flushing.

Crews will flush fire hydrants on cul-de-sac and nonlooped watermains from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting Sept. 16. It may also take place on weekends, weather permitting.

Private hydrant flushing and maintenance for commercial buildings, townhome associations, and apartment complexes is the responsibility of the property owner, and must be coordinated with Burnsville’s Utilities Superintendent to ensure minimal disturbance to the City’s water distribution system.
