Bridge Safety Report Card: How Does Burnsville Stack Up?

On the five-year anniversary of the I-35 bridge collapse we find out: How structurally sound are the bridges in and around Burnsville?

We've got over 400 bridges in Dakota County, and with three major highways crisscrossing town, a fair share of them are located within Burnsville's city limits. On the anniversary of the , we did a little digging to find out how well our briges are holding up. Note: If the bridge you're looking for is not on this list, there is no current safety data on it in the National Bridge Inventory Database.

Southbound Highway 77 Location: Bridge leading into Eagan over Minnesota River, begins .3 miles north of the junction at Highway 13. Structure Number: 19013 Year Built: 1978 Average Daily Traffic: 47,000 Safety Evaluation: Railings, guardrails, transitions meet current, acceptable standards. Deck and substructure in good condition. Superstructure in satisfactory condition. All in all, equal to present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 85 percent.

Location: Bridge leading into Eagan over Minnesota River, begins .3 miles north of the junction at Highway 13. Structure Number: 19014 Year Built: 1978 Average Daily Traffic: 47,000 Safety Evaluation: Railings, guardrails, transitions meet current, acceptable standards. Deck and substructure in good condition. Superstructure in satisfactory condition. All in all, equal to present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating 79.5 percent
County Road 42  Location: A highway-pedestrian bridge about .3 miles west of the junction of County Road 5. Structure Number: 19511 Year Built: 1971 Average Daily Traffic: 38,231 Safety Evaluation: Railings, transitions, and guardrails meet current, acceptable standards. Deck, superstructure, and substructure in good condition. All in all, better than present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 90.1 percent
County Road 38 I Location: Crosses Interstate 35 West, about 1.8 miles south of the junction with Highway 13. Structure Number: 19522 Year Built: 1984 Average Daily Traffic: 17,400 Safety Evaluation: Railings meet current, acceptable standards. Transitions and guardrails do not. Deck and substructure are in good condition. Superstructure is satisfactory. All in all, equal to present, minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 90.2 percent • Route 101 Location: A highway-pedestrian bridge. Intersects Interstate 35, about .5 miles south of the split between I-35 E and I-35 W. Structure Number: 19804 Year Built: 1988 Average Daily Traffic: 3,900 Safety Evaluation: Railings, guardrails and transitions meet current, acceptable standards. Deck, substructure and superstructure in good condition. All in all, better than the present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 85.9 percent
Interstate 35 East, Southbound I Location: At split between I-35 E and I-35 W. Structure Number: 19809 Year Built: 1964 Average Daily Traffic: 19,500 Safety Evaluation: Railings, guardrails, and transitions meet current acceptable standards. Deck and substructure are in satisfactory condition. Superstructure in fair condition. All in all, somewhat better than minimum adequacy, good enough to tolerate being left in place as is. Sufficiency Rating: 82.8 percent
Interstate 35 East, Southbound II Location: Intersects County Road 42, about .4 miles northeast of the split with I-35 W. Structure Number: 19811 Year Built: 1978 Average Daily Traffic: 19,500 Safety Evaluation: Railings, guardrails, and transitions meet current acceptable standards. Deck in satisfactory condition. Superstructure and substructure in good condition. All in all, better than present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 96.2 percent

Deck and substructure in good condition. Superstructure in satisfactory condition. Equal to present minimum crtieria. Sufficiency Rating: 94.5 percent

Deck, superstructure and substructure are in satisfactory condition. Equal to present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 89.5 percent
County Road 38 II Location: Intersects Interstate 35 East, about 1.6 miles north of split with I-35 W. Structure Number: 19866 Year Built: 1979 Average Daily Traffic: 22,000 Safety Evaluation: Railings, guardrails and transitions meet current acceptable standards. Deck is in satisfactory condition. Superstructure and substructure are in good condition. All in all, better than present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 95.9 percent
Portland Avenue (Route 101) Location: Intersects Interstate 35 East, about 1 miles northeast of split with I-35W.  Structure Number: 19889 Year Built: 1979 Average Daily Traffic: 8,000 Safety Evaluation: Railings, guardrails and transitions meet current acceptable standards. Structure Number: 6583 Year Built: 1959 Average Daily Traffic: 99,000 Safety Evaluation: Functionally obsolete. Railings, transitions and guardrail ends meet current acceptable standards. Approach guardrails do not. Deck is in good condition. Superstructure and substructure are satisfactory. Equal to present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 81 percent
Highway 13 Westbound Location: Intersects Interstate 35W. Structure Number: 9779 Year Built: 1959. Reconstructed in 1996. Average Daily Traffic: 18,000 Safety Evaluation: Functionally obsolete. Railings, transitions, approach guardrail ends meet current acceptable standards. Approach guardrails do not. Deck is in good condition. Superstructure and substructure are satisfactory. Equal to present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 76.8 percent
Highway 13 Eastbound Location: Intersects I-35W. Structure Number: 9780 Year Built: 1959. Reconstructed in 1996.  Average Daily Traffic: 18,000 Safety Evaluation: Functionally obsolete. Railings, guardrail ends, and transitions meet current acceptable standards. Approach guardrails do not. Deck is in good condition. Superstructure and substructure are satisfactory. Equal to present minimum criteria. Sufficiency Rating: 76. 8 percent
Municipal Road 1 Location: Intersects Black Dog Creek, about .1 miles west of Highway 77. Structure Number: L5773 Year Built: 1953 Average Daily Traffic: 872 Safety Evaluation: A frame bridge. Bridge foundations determined to be stable. Railings, guardrails meet current acceptable standards. Transitions and guardrail ends do not. Deck and superstructure are in very good condition. Substructure is in good condition. Better than present minimum criteria.  Sufficiency Rating: 80.8 percent
Black Dog Road Location: Intersects a channel on the Minnesota River. Structure Number: L5774 Year Built: 1956 Average Daily Traffic: 1,040 in 1987 Safety Evaluation: Structurally deficient. Foundations found to be stable. Transitions and guardrails meet current acceptable standards. Railings do not. Deck and superstructure in satisfactory condition. Substructure is in poor condition. Meets minimum tolerable limits to be left in place as is. Sufficiency Rating: 25.9 percent
