Burnsville Asks Residents for Cable Service Feedback

The city is preparing for cable franchise renewal discussions with Comcast Cable.

The Burnsville City Council wants to hear from residents, business owners and community organizations about their experiences with cable and community media, the city announced in a news release.

A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the city council meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at city hall. Earlier this year, the city conducted six focus group sessions and an online survey to gather public input on cable service.

Currently, Burnsville holds a cable franchise agreement with Comcast Cable that expires in January 2015. The cable company notified the city in 2012 of its intent to renegotiate its franchise agreement with the city.

Burnsville is required by federal law to enter into contract renewal negotiations with the incumbent cable provider, in this case Comcast.

According to the news release: "Due to changes in federal law, the city no longer has any local authority over rates, but can help set standards related to customer service, technology and community television in its renewed franchise."
