All three employees watched as Siegfried pushed the cart past all the store’s checkout stations without attempting to pay for the merchandise, the complaint says. The loss prevention officer confronted Siegfried in the store’s vestibule and called police.

Siegfried refused to talk to store authorities or police. The complaint says the value of the stolen merchandise was $1,596.

The earlier criminal complaint charges Siegfried with writing a bad check for $530 to Mills Fleet Farm in Lakeville on Aug. 24.

According to that complaint, the cashier who handled the transaction wrote Siegfried’s driver’s license number and date of birth on the check. The store also provided Lakeville police with a surveillance image taken during the transaction.

The store sent Siegfried a letter demanding payment on Aug. 30, but did not hear back from him. Police also attempted to contact him without success.

Siegfried remains in the Dakota County Jail on a $10,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled for Jan. 24 in Dakota County District Court in Hastings.
