Savage Man Sentenced for Rape of Teenage Girls

A known sex offender accused of raping two girls was sentenced to one year and one day in jail.

David Michael Hunter-Patrick, a 20-year-old Savage man, was booked into the St. Cloud Correctional Facility on Sept. 18 for a crime that occurred this past winter. On Jan. 30, a father brought his daughter to the Savage Police Department and told officers that she had been raped about two days earlier.

The girl, who was 15 at the time, initially told officers that she and the defendant had gotten into a physical altercation after police observed fingernail marks on her arms, but left the rape out.

Eventually, the girl, referred to as V1 in the original criminal complaint, said that Hunter-Patrick had raped her on Jan. 28. V1 told police that she and another friend, a 16-year-old referred to as V2, went with Hunter-Patrick to his home.

Hunter-Patrick plied the girls with vodka and beer, then led them upstairs to his room. The three of them were listening to music when V2 became sick, vomiting all over the room. After changing her clothes, V2 went to sleep on the bed, but woke up to see V1 and Hunter-Patrick having sex, which V1 characterized as forced. 

When Hunter-Patrick finished with V1, he began stroking V2's back and legs, in spite of her objections. At that point, Hunter-Patrick stopped and the three agreed to go to sleep. V2 woke up suddenly and found that Hunter-Patrick was having sex with her. He kept going, she said, even though she told him to stop four or five times.

Over the course of the investigation, officers also discovered that Hunter-Patrick had violated the terms of an adjudication from a previous sex offense by failing to update his information in the registry.

Hunter-Patrick was charged with knowingly violating the terms of sex offender registration and two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct—one charge for sex with a minor aged 13 to 15 and another for sexually assaulting a mentally impaired or helpless victim. Each criminal sex count carried a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.

In July, Hunter-Patrick signed a plea deal. In exchange, the second sex charge against him was dismissed.

On Sept. 14,  Scott County Judge Rex D. Stacey sentenced Hunter-Patrick to one year and one day in the St. Cloud Correctional Facility. As per the order, Hunter-Patrick will actually serve eight months, with four months supervised release, however. The sentence is less than called for by state guidelines. In his sentencing report, Stacey indicated that he lowered the sentence because the defendant had signed a plea deal and was amenable to treatment.

This is not Hunter-Patrick's first offense. In 2010, Hunter-Patrick was charged with fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct in Hennepin County. At the time, he was still a juvenile. He received a stay of adjudication in that case, which means that if he had completed his probation successfully, the conviction would not appear on his permanent record.
