Former Educator Sentenced for Sexual Relationship with Student

Michelle Rose Chlan, a 27-year-old of Shakopee woman, pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

A Shakopee woman will spend 90 days in jail for engaging in sexual conduct with a student in her charge.

Judge Erica MacDonald sentenced Michelle Rose Chlan, age 27, to roughly three months in jail and 15 years of probation for having sexual relations with a 16-year-old male student she met while working as a para-professional in the Shakopee school system. Chlan will also have to register as a predatory offender and pay restitution.

According to the original criminal complaint, Chlan's encounters spanned a period of 13 months — from June 2009 to July of 2010. Investigating officers stated that on at least three separate occasions Chlan drove the victim to various locations in Burnsville and performed oral sex on the student in her car.

In March of 2011, the Dakota County Attorney's Office charged Chlan with three counts of third-criminal sexual conduct. In December 2011, Chlan pleaded guilty to one count. The remaining charges were dismissed.

By the terms of the sentence ordered by MacDonald, Chlan is forbidden from having contact with children under the age of 18. If Chlan violates any of the conditions of her sentence, she could face a stiffer penalty: up to 36 months in prison.
