Burnsville Police to Offer Citizens Academy

The 11-week program is open to Burnsville residents, as well as folks who work in the city.

The Burnsville Police Department is announcing openings for its 2012 Citizens Academy. The program offers those that live or work in Burnsville an inside look at the Burnsville Police Department’s operation. A number of topics will be covered that include:

• History and tour of the Burnsville Police Department.

• Review of common police calls, laws of arrest and handcuffing procedures.

• Functions of police patrol, investigations, SWAT, physical evidence team, domestic abuse response team, negotiators, bike patrol, traffic and K-9 units.

• Traffic stops and DWI-stop demonstration.

• Officer survival and use of force.

• Driving course.

• Student-involved scenarios including a Taser demonstration and shooting in the Department’s indoor range

Academy classes are taught by Burnsville Police Officers, and “cadets” are asked to make a commitment to attend each session. The program is 11 weeks long, and will begin on Sept. 6 and run through Nov. 15. Sessions are held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. After the successful completion of the program, graduates will be given an opportunity to ride along with a Burnsville Police officer for four hours during a police shift.

Residents interested in participating in the Citizens Academy can fill out an application online at www.burnsville.org/citizensacademy and return it to the Burnsville Police Department no later than Aug. 10. The Academy class is limited to 20 participants.
