Parents Talk: Snow Days and Sick Days

When your children have an unplanned day off of school, what do you do about your own work responsibilities?

Juggling children and work can be a struggle sometimes.

When school is cancelled because of a snowstorm or your child comes down with the flu, what do you do about your own work responsibilities?

On one hand, your children are the most important responsibility you have. And on the other, your job is the thing that pays the bills, providing for your children.

This blog entitled “Weather, sick days leave working parents snowed under” provides tips for what you can do to ensure your kids are well taken care of and that your career is taken care of as well.

And even if you have planned in advance for days like this, sometimes–as I know from experience–it can still be a scramble.

Please share advice on what works for you and your family in the comments section below.

One of my parents would always stay home with me when I was younger, once I hit sixth grade or so, I could stay home by myself. I'm sure Grandpa was a babysitter to. I think you just do what you have to do until the child is old enough to be left unsupervised.

My husband is able to work from the house by connecting to his work's network. My office cannot and being that it's really small; I can't take off. My kids are older so it's not essential that I be there and they are legally allowed to be home alone. The phone is always nearby..besides they sleep all day when they are home sick or they stay indoors if (and when there is a snow day...extremely rare in Shakopee).

I remember when this happened my mom would sometimes have me spend time with a friend who's parent(s) were around or if my grandma was able to I'd have a friend whose parents couldn't take off from work stay with me. As kids we loved it as it was a chance to spend time together when we weren't at school. But I don't remember many snow days. Robbinsdale School District hardly ever declared those :-)
