This Week At The Rivers 7-13-12

Another week goes by at The Rivers Senior Community with a blog from Joe Johnson, Activity Director.

Can you believe we are nearly half way through July and that means half way through summer? Where did the time go?

People tell me that as we get older time goes by much faster. When we were kids, summer went on forever and ever but now summer seems to blink right by us. It just makes us cherish each day a little more.

This week seemed to fly by at The Rivers Senior Community. At least the weather was much more tolerable than last week's heat and humidity.  That meant that all of our outings were able to go on as planned. When there are heat advisories or severe weather we cancel outings for safety purposes, so it was good to be able to go on our regular outings. We took advantage of the Burnsville Senior Center this week and about 14 residents joined in for the "Fun and Friendship" program. They had a good lunch and some fun entertainment.

Tonight a group of residents are heading to Eagan Senior High to take in a production of "Cinderella." Sounds like fun too.

Besides those outings we have regular bus trips to the local grocery stores, the Burnhaven Library, out to lunch at local Burnsville restaurants and shopping at stores like Wal-Mart, Herberger's and Trader Joe's. We also go a couple of times a month to Mystic Lake Casino. It gives the residents opportunites to check out local businesses and get out of the house so to speak.

This week was also Free Breakfast Wednesday. On the second Wednesday of the month we offer our residents a free breakfast served up by our talented chef. It's always something different and Wednesday was no exception. It was an asparagus egg bake dish that was delicious. It's a way of saying thank you for being a resident of The Rivers. If you lived here, you'd get free breakfast too.

Next week looks like a busy week here at The Rivers (but what else is new, it's always busy here). On Monday at 3 p.m. The Bandana Trio will be here to perform for us.  They have been here before and always put on a great show. Wednesday at 3 p.m. we will have our annual Midsummer Casino Party. We use our big event room and turn it into a casino with fun games of dice, blackjack, slots and spin the wheel.  The residents use play money and use that money to bid on prizes for our auction at the end of the party.  It's always good fun and you are welcome to join us.

Let's hope for a good rest of the summer with days not too hot or too rainy. We can sit back and relax and take in these days until the chill comes and we are headed back to fall and winter.  Have a great week and I will blog again next week.
