Business Notes: TCF Banks Tumbles Down, Pita Shop and Tires Plus on the Way

After years or reversals and delays, the TCF Bank site will be redeveloped at last. This week bulldozers tore into the white-columned building, referred to by City Planner Chris Slania as a "landmark."

The building that graced the corner of Nicollet and Burnsville Parkway since 1974 is almost gone. A CVS Pharmacy will go up on the lot in the months to come. It's been a long road for the redevelopment project — known as the Nicollet Addition. The plan has been in the works since 2007, when the Economic Development Authority signed a contract with Burnsville Crossing LLC to redevelop the site as a pharmacy, medical office building paired and two-tier parking lot. In the intervening five years, the project has changed many times: The parking deck dropped out and the pharmacy took priority.

Construction will begin shortly on the 13,740 square foot CVS, which will be equipped with a drive-through window and a landscaped plaza area for pedestrians.

The CVS is just Phase I. Phase II will include additional commercial development and office space, though the specifics are still vague at this point.

According to a report in the Star Tribune, the Burnsville CVS is part of a larger battle by the company to wrest territory from its biggest competitor, . As of February, CVS planned to open a spate of new stores, including a new pharmacy in Edina — right next to an existing Walgreen's. 

• The folks at and will have a new neighbor soon. An intriguing sandwich shop — Pita Plus — is set to open up in the space formerly occupied by Quiznos Subs.

• Work has begun on a new Tires Plus store, which will be wedged into the south end of the strip mall at the intersection of Cliff and Highway 13. The 8,420 square foot auto repair shop will be the latest addition to the shopping center, which was first built in 1971.
