Bimbo Bakeries is going bigger and better in Savage.
The company recently asked the city to approve for an 11,305 square foot addition to its building in the Eagle Creek Business Park, a warehouse and distribution facility. The existing site includes a 4,525 square foot front office and an 11,200 warehouse. The site presently has two loading docks now for semi tractor trailers and 14 smaller ones for delivery trucks. The expansion plan would call for three more large loading docks and 19 smaller docks, a measure that would more than double facility's capacity.
The bakery will need additional support for regional delivery. Many Americans are unfamiliar with Bimbo, the U.S. division of a Mexican company, Grupo Bimbo. However, the company has been growing at a blistering clip and quietly building a baking empire that spans Latin America and a significant chunk of Asia in addition to the states. It is now the largest bakery in the U.S. and the second largest in the world.
Bimbo has been on an acquisition-spree since the mid-1990s, when the organization purchased La Hacienda, a tortilla company in California. Sicne then, Bimbo has absorbed at least nine other companies, including iconic brands like Sara Lee. The company now counts Oroweat bread and buns, Entenmann’s sweet baked goods, Thomas’ English muffins and bagels and Boboli pizza breads as its own.
At present, Bimbo Bakeries USA operates over 70 bakeries and employs more than 27,000 people.
