Best Buy to Debut Small Store Format in Burnsville

The Richfield-based company is experimenting with mobile stores—smaller outlets that offer only mobile devices, tablets and e-readers.

While Best Buy is in the process of downsizing many of its big-box stores throughout the state and country, its mobile stores are growing in number.

Seven new Best Buy Mobile stores will open this fall, with Woodbury, Stillwater, Roseville and Burnsville locations planned. Mobile stores are typically smaller than regular stores and carry only mobile devices, tablets and e-readers.

In March, Best Buy announced it would close 50 standard stores nationwide and downsize square footage in others—including the Richfield location. After first quarter profits were announced in May, anaylists attributed discounts on smartphones as a major contributing factor to profits exceeding expectations. It's no wonder the mobile-only stores are part of the company's strategy to increase storefronts, but limit square footage.

According to TwinCities.com, the new Twin Cities locations will be roughly twice as large as previous Best Buy Mobile locations—and most won't be in traditional enclosed shopping malls.
