Businessman Chosen as New CEO of 360 Communities

One of the largest non-profits in the metro area will now be helmed by Sal Mondelli, a businessman who describes himself as a specialist in "turnaround situations."

After almost six months adrift, 360 Communities has a new leader. On Wednesday, the non-profit announced that Sal Mondelli had been chosen as the new CEO and president of the organization, which is best known for its network of food shelves and domestic violence shelters. 

The top spot at 360 Communities has been open since longtime President and CEO was removed from her post in . Ajax spent over 30 years with the organization, which was previously known as Community Action Council. he helped found the first in 1979, one of the first stand-alone domestic violence shelters in the U.S. 

However, in recent years the agency has been embroiled in financial turmoil. According to a Star Tribune report in December 2011, 360 Communities lost $363,000 in 2009, the last full year for which figures were available. The organization also saw considerable turnover in the top ranks in the months leading up to Ajax's ousting, with four leaders leaving over summer and fall of last year.

Mondelli has a corporate background, primarily. In the past he has been a CEO for growth companies, startups and the Business Unit Executive for IBM. In his LinkedIn profile he describes himself as an "experienced general manager...who has achieved sustained revenue and profit growth at large and small companies." He touted his ability to take on "turnaround situations" and "dispassionately make difficult decisions to produce winning teams." 

Mondelli's business acumen was a selling point for the board of 360 Communities.

"We believe that Sal's drive and business expertise will help us continue to fulfill our important mission to the community," Board Chair Peter Diessner said in a release from the agency.

Mondelli is a familiar name around Burnsville. He is currently the board chairman of the Burnsville Performing Arts Center's advisory committee. He also serves as a board member for Fairview Ridges Hospital, Silicon Informatics, Greater Minneapolis YMCA and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Minnesota.
