Batten Down the Hatches: May Could Open With Beastly Weather

Thunderstorms, high winds, hail and a few tornadoes could be in the offing in Lakeville and the surrounding area Tuesday night.

We might need to borrow the “lion” comparison typically used in March to describe tomorrow’s weather.

The forecast for Tuesday, the first day of May, looks quite beastly for Burnsville, with the potential of strong thunderstorms and a few tornadoes.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the southern two-thirds of Minnesota for Tuesday through Friday. There is a chance of thunderstorms during the period, but especially Tuesday night, when a cold front moves through.

The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center says there is a slight chance of severe weather—greater than a 10-percent chance—Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday night, damaging winds, large hail and, maybe, tornadoes are possible “particularly along and west of Interstate 35,” says the center’s website. The best chance of tornadoes will be before 10 p.m. Tuesday.

“Be sure to monitor updated forecasts and outlooks today and Tuesday, and be prepared to take action should severe weather threaten,” the weather service says.

Meteorologist Paul Douglas, in his weather blog on StarTribune.com, says the ingredients for severe weather—air temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s, dew-point temperatures in the 60s, moisture and wind shear—will be present during the late afternoon and early evening Tuesday, and large hail and tornadoes are possible.

“We’ll see,” he says.

The weather service is forecast daytime highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s and 60s through at least Friday.
