THIS WEEK: Wizard of Oz, Small Biz Expo and a 'Run for Hope'

Monday

  • Family Game Night: Bring the kids for a night of Sorry, Uno, Twister and other classic board games. Free. Supplies provided. Game night begins at the at 6 p.m.
  • Parks & Natural Resources Commission: The commission will discuss revisions to the city's storm water pollution prevention program and the possibility of putting historical plaques in city park. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Burnsville City Hall.

Tuesday

  • City Council Meeting: The council will accept the Blue Star Award presented by Friends of the Mississippi River. They will also consider a joint agreement with the City of Apple Valley for projects on Alimagnet, Lac Lavon, and Keller Lake.   • Garden Ribbon Cutting: Come for the ribbon cutting for the new Garden Center from 4:30 p.m. to  5 p.m. 
  • Dakota Valley Symphony Homecoming Concert: The symphony returns from a tour of local venues, performing with the Dakota Valley Symphony Chorus and a folk ensemble, Dragonfly. It begins in the 's Black Box Theatre at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (55+), and $5 for students. 
  • South of the River Small Business Expo: Join the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce at the Buck Hill Event Center to network with other chamber members from Dakota County. Event includes complimentary hor d'oeurves, a cash bar, and exhibits by members from Burnsville, Apple Valley, Dakota County Regional, River Heights, Lakeville and Hastings. The expo runs from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Buck Hill Event Center.

Thursday

  • Dragon Fly: Listen-in or sing-along to original and traditional acoustic folk music favorites with Dragon Fly. The show begins at 1:30 p.m. at Burnhaven Library.

  • Wizard of Oz – the Ballet: In response to the success of its 2011 World Premiere, “Wizard of Oz—the Ballet” returns to BPAC. This year's offering by the Twin Cities Ballet is an all new, full-length production of the familiar classic tale. The show starts on Friday, at 7 p.m. with subsequent showings on Saturday (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.). Orchestra seating is $26 for adults, $21 for children under 12 and seniors over 65. Balcony seats are $16 for adult and $12 for children under 12 and seniors over 65.

Saturday

  • SHOWcase 7:30 pm Mraz Center
  • City Manager Performance Evaluation: The city council will hold a special worksession to give City Manager Craig Ebeling an annual review. It begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Council Chambers at Burnsville City Hall.
  • Run for Hope 5K: hosts the second annual Run for Hope 5k, a race benefiting Hope for Tomorrow, a local youth organization in Burnsville, Apple Valley, Eagan, Lakeville, Bloomington and White Bear Lake schools. The timed race begins at Valley Natural Foods at 8:00 a.m. The event is open to individuals of all ages, though children under the age of 18 need the signed permission from a legal guardian to participate. Registration costs $28.25 per person.

  • Poets in the Park Poetry Slam: Slam Master Cynthia French emcees this spoken-word poetry competition at Caponi Art Park, which will also showcase the breakdancing group, New Heist Crew. Winners of the Dakota County Library System's poetry contest will be announced. Slam competitors should arrive at 1:30 p.m. to register. Event begins at 2 p.m.
  • A Salute to the Great Female Vocalists of the 50s—Girls Singers of the Hit Parade: Burnsville residents arte invited down memory lane  with a musical revue saluting Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Doris Day, and others. The performance begins in BPAC's Black Box Theatre at 1 p.m. Tickets are $19 per person.
