'Harvard of Comedy' Comes to Burnsville

Live this Saturday: See performers from Chicago's Second City—which counts Tina Fey and the Belushi brothers among its alumni.

When/Where: 8 p.m. Saturday; Burnsville Performing Arts Center

What It Is: Chicago's renowned comedy team, The Second City, performs as a fundraiser for the Burnsville Rotary Club. See some of the best improvisational comedy from the organization that has given comedians like Tina Fey, John and Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd their starts. A silent auction, appetizers and music precede the show.

2. Bell Fantasia

When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Friday; Burnsville Performing Arts Center

What It Is: For this one-time performance three local handbell ensembles come together to regale the audience with the whimsical music from Disney’s film Fanstasia. Bells of the Lakes will be joined by the distinguished college group St. Olaf Handbell Choir and one of the few youth handbell ensembles in the nation, Northern Lights Ringers from the Twin Cities.

Cost: $25.00 for adults; $15.00 for seniors over 62, students, and groups of 10 or more.

When/Where: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday; Eagan Civic Arena

What It Is: The host of “The Choo Choo Bob Show” and his friends will be performing, meeting kids and signing autographs as part of this all-train expo. It also includes Thomas the Tank Engine play tables for kids to enjoy; inflatables to jump in, on and around; cool train layouts of all gauges to watch, as well as unique train merchandise for sale. One attendee will win a complete Lionel O Gauge train set—a $200 value.

Cost: $5; free for ages 8 and under

4. Titania: The Sea

When/Where: 2 p.m. Sunday; Burnsville Performing Arts Center

What It Is: The Dakota Valley Symphony commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic with Mednelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (the Titan).

Cost: Tickets for adults cost $15; the price for seniors 55 and up is $12; students get in for $5.

When/Where: 7 p.m. Sunday; Lakeville Area Arts Center

What It Is: American violinist Chad Hoopes has been appearing with numerous ensembles throughout the world since he won the first prize at the Young Artists Division of the Yehudi Menuhlin International Violin Competition. His exceptional talent and magnificent tone, and "an inspiring blend of emotional expression and technical ease," are critically acclaimed.
