The Minnesota Department of Transportation has proposed building noise the barriers along I-35 between 157th Street West and the County Road 46 interchange in 2015. According to the Star Tribune, 25 homes—12 on the west side and 13 on the east side—would benefit from the noise reduction barriers. MnDOT conducted a public information meeting at Nativity Episcopal Church, near the proposed site of the walls, this past Thursday. There, residents were able to view the project’s design and layout and ask MnDOT representatives questions. Residents impacted by the walls have been provided with a …

I currently live within eyesight of Buck Hill, have lived in this beautiful area for the past 29 years, and strongly recommend NOT building the proposed sound walls on either side of I35 in south Burnsville. I grew up and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area on the west side of the Bay on what is called The Peninsula, an extended series of suburb cities from San Francisco to San Jose. John Kline's (R) race against Democratic challenger Mike Obermueller has caught the eye of the Washington Post. Minnesota's Second Congressional District may be "surprisingly competitive" this year, according to a May 11 article in the Post highlighting battleground districts across the country. Kline "drew the short straw" in redistricting, the Post said, and faces tighter re-election chances. The Post also cited the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's decision to provide support to Obermueller through its Red to Blue Emerging Races program as a factor. Kline, a five-term incumbent, has for years won re-election by double-digit margins in…

DFL Shoots Down Maguire's Endorsement Challenge

A party commission voted to uphold its endorsement of former legislator Jim Carlson on Saturday.

A DFL commission ruled against Eagan Mayor Mike Maguire on Saturday, rejecting his challenge to the party's endorsement of former legislator Jim Carlson. The ruling is a setback to Maguire's campaign for the District 51 Senate seat, currently held by Sen. Ted Daley (R). Maguire competed earlier this spring against Carlson, a fellow Democrat, in a high profile campaign for the DFL endorsement in the race. Carlson took the endorsement on a 200 to 133 vote on the fourth ballot of the endorsement convention on March 24. But Maguire filed a challenge to the endorsement on April 18 after the discovery of a series of convention voting errors in Carlson's favor. The DFL's Constitution Commission gave the challenge a full review in the weeks …

Cedar Avenue Scheduled for Closures

Two blocks of Cedar will close overnight from Friday to Saturday for sewer work.

Cedar Avenue is scheduled to be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday between 145th and 147th streets for water and sewer work, according to Dakota County. Recommended detours are to use 140th and 150th (County Road 42) streets to route around the closure. Construction on Cedar began in April 2011. The county project involves creating shoulders specifically for buses and widening Cedar Avenue to accommodate a bus rapid transit system, a station-to-station line that would have buses running from Lakeville to a park-and-ride near the Mall of America and back every 15 minutes during the week. The goal of bus rapid transit, which also is recommended or planned for other corridors besides Cedar, is to better and more quickly connect …
