Dakota County Library Book Bribe: Kids Earn Waterpark Tickets, iPod Touch for Summer Reading

The library's "Bookawocky" summer reading program offers kids and teens a number of prizes in exchange for books they complete between June and August.

"The big thing about reading is, you have to be in the condition for it. Physical condition, too. This body of mine is a constant distraction. Here I am trying to read, busy reading, yet persistently obliged to put my book aside in order to hit the can, clip my nails, shave, throw up, clean my teeth, brush my rug, [...] take an aspirin, light a cigarette, order more coffee, scratch my ear and look out the window." - Martin Amis, Money To help surmount the countless distractions knocking at the gates of Sustained Literary Exploration, the Dakota County Library is offering local kids and teens a number of small bribes in recompense for completing the chore of reading. The "Bookawocky Summer Reading Experience" program is offering children …

Two-Day Music Fest Gets Green Light from Savage City Council

The council gave the organizers of the Greater Downtown Savage Music Festival the go-ahead, with a few strings attached.

Rock on, Savage. Monday night, the city council approved a request from Neisen's and the Savage American Legion, which hope to put on the Greater Downtown Savage Music Festival, a two-day event with outdoor and indoor shows. The council approved the request unanimously, but with a few caveats. For one thing, the party will have to end sooner, rather than later. Initially, event organizers asked to fenced off a stretch of Princeton Avenue between 123rd Street and the city parking lot south of the Legion, where a crowd of 600 to 900 patrons could drink, dance and eat. They also asked that the fenced-in remain open from 6 p.m. to midnight.  Neisen's has already been the subject of noise complaints in the past. According to City Administrator …

Performing Arts Center Management Co. Will Stay On—With Some Caveats

Tuesday night, the council renewed ties with VenuWorks, the management company that has led the Burnsville Performing Arts Center since the beginning, but the contract will have some stiff, new provisions.

The Burnsville City Council opted for incumbent management firm, VenuWorks, to helm the city's $21 million performing arts center, but some had a stern message for the company: Beat the bottom line, or else.  "Gone are the days when we'll accept a $200,000 or $250,000 operating loss. The Burnsville Performing Arts Center has run up an annual deficit ever since it opened in 2009. VenuWorks has managed the center from its opening day forward. The city began exploring new management options in late summer of 2012, with one year left on VenuWork's contract. Over fall and early winter, the center attracted two …
